Senior Project 1.0

Senior Project Proposal

A Combination of Ceramics, Graphics, Sculpture and Décor into a mixture of two trends: Modern Chic and Urban Thrift.

(Modern Chic - Expensive, Clean, Straight. Urban Thrift - Neutral Colors, Flower Prints, Earthy, Organic)

I see myself as a Practical Creative Designer. Creating a piece of art that then serves a purpose is what I want to accomplish through this Senior Project. I want to show how Art is all around us in our everyday lives. Also I’d like for my projects to flow with one another. I would like to have both Senior Project I and Senior Project II to be separate, yet still fit together as a whole.

This is my project idea: Designing a Restaurant set up, which contains the Restaurant name, sign, logo, menu, business advertisement, Restaurant table and chairs, a dish set, and a light.

My Challenge is to combine the four areas of Art that I thrive on, Graphics, Sculpture, Ceramics and Interior Decor along with the two areas of trends I am drawn to, Modern Chic and Urban Thrift. The Restaurant logo, sign, etc being the Graphics part, the Table, Chairs and Light being the Sculpture part, the Dish Set being the Ceramics and the color, shape and set up being the Interior Décor.

Sometime last year I began thinking of this project. Ever since I have been excited to begin the work, and actually began this last summer working on the table. I just couldn’t wait any longer. Over the summer I began looking a lot at Alisa Burke’s blog and realized that her style and her approach to art was becoming very inspiring to me. She makes art her life. Now she doesn’t have a life that is just art with no social life or anything else; she makes art be her life. From the foods she makes to the days spent in her studio to time spent with her husband, you can see art and the desire to be creative. I want to be like that. I want my life not to be about art, I want my life to be art. And I feel that showing others how art is all around us in everyday objects is one way I can share what I want for my life to others.

Down to the nitty gritty stuff:

GRAPHICS : Restaurant Sign with Name & Logo, 30”x40”, hanging from the ceiling of the gallery above the table but off to the back. The sign will be printed, on vinyl or possibly something harder. Then I will also have a frame made to hang the sign, most likely our of metal, possibly wood. Also I will use chain and such to hang it from the ceiling. Menu: 6”x6” booklet, containing sandwiches, desserts, specialty drinks. Business Advertisement: business cards 3.5”x

2”, special open mic night advertisement 4”x6”.

SCULPTURE: Light, using everyday items such as hanging p

lanter basket, white spray paint, ribbon, wax paper, parchment paper. I have a few ideas on how to make such a light. Now, this project is going to have to be trial and error because I have never made a light before. One way is going to use wax paper, tissue paper, etc. and make a box shaped frame to stretch the paper on. Then adding a design made out of paper to put on the inside of the light to then be shown through when the light is on. Another idea is using a hanging planter to hang strips of ribbon on that have circular pieces of paper hanging on them. The last idea I have is to use a box shaped item and wrap string around it in many directions, while using a pod-podge type of p

roduct then taking the box shaped item out and then inserting the light in the middle. So is a wrap up, I am going to be creating a shape, form, object to go over a hanging light bulb.

Table, made out of solid walnut, 36”x36” and Legs are 41” tall. Chairs made out of walnut to match the Table with cushion seats. (Now the Table and Chairs are going to be a bit of a bonus to the projects. I am just learning woodworking from my dad, which is why I did some

of it over the summer and will finish the rest over Christmas Break. Which has been a very fun experience).

CERAMICS: Dish Set. For the Table there will be a Set of Four. The Set would consist of a 4 Dinner Plates, 4 Salad Plates, 4 Bowls, 4 Mugs, a Serving Plate and a Serving Bowl. All will go along with the square theme of the Table but will have an organic feel to add the Urban Thrift Trend. I have had Ceramics, and do feel comfortable to accomplish this project.

DECOR: Through each of the three categories above each one will have a mixture of the two trends mentioned before. The Design will be the play on color, shape and appearance to allow it all to work together. The way the dishes and menu are arranged on the Table, the way the Table is positioned under the light and sign.

The Table (so far)

I consider myself very lucky. God has blessed me with the most amazing dad! Now, there are so many reasons why he is the BEST but one, small, yet super exciting reason is his love for wood working! So, this past summer I encouraged him to teach me his ways!! He

did just that and let me pick what type of wood I wanted for my Table. Funny Story: he started pulling out Oak, Pine and Cherry boards, well those were fine but I wasn't thrilled with them. Then I happened to stumble upon Walnut!! Yes, he did let me know it was the most expensive

he had but he was thrilled to let me use it! (at least that is what he told me)

Well as you can see in the photos below we started at the beginning, planing the boards! Then we were onto the layout of each board! Finally I placed each board how I wanted cut and glued each piece together for the top of the Table! That wasn't even close to the hard part. Oh sanding. Next time I decide to make a table, or anything out of wood, I will need to

condition my arms before!

But the sanding soon was finished and I love how the Table has turned out! Photos of the finished Table will have to wait until next Semester because for Fall Semester I am focusing on the Graphics of my Senior Project and the Light Fixture!! (I can't wait to post the photos!)

GRAPHICS!

Above are some of my brainstorming ideas for the Restaurant Logo/Sign.

Delish by Felish... kind of catchy, don't ya think!! :)

Well I think I am leaning more towards the upper left design. I like the color flow and am loving how the "Delish" font kind of looks like a Deli font since the Restaurant menu is going to contain mostly Sandwiches! I am planning on changing the "felish." It is hard to read, so I need to find a better font for that, but after I change that I think I will have a good start to the logo for the Restaurant!

Being Crafty!

I like change...
My old bedspread just wasn't doing anything for me anymore, but the problem was I had no money to go and buy a new one. So I pulled together scraps of fabric and began to work on my very own, very unique bedspread!

I cut it all in strips and laid it all out to plan how I would put it all together!
THE BEST PART!
I figured out how to make these adorable fabric flowers! They add a nice touch to the strips!

Finished Product, on my bed at school! The best part is that it only cost me 6 dollars!!! :)

Now that I have been a college student for 4ish years, I am always finding ways to save money. But the hardest part is that I love the look and style of the expensive. So... I do what I can to save!

A friends birthday is tomorrow and I wanted to get a gift for her, I got to the gift bag section and noticed how crazily expensive the bags are. So I bought one for 85 cents and fixed it up!!

First Post!

I am currently a Senior in Graphic Design at Huntington University! I am excited to begin to document just one year of all my work! I like to see myself as more of a Creative Designer than just Graphic Design, so get ready to see more than just art from a Computer!
Please comment! I would love to hear what you have to say and what you are thinking when you see a piece of art or read what I am learning in my Senior Year!

My Hand in Corporate Design

Corporate Design

Oh what a struggle it was for me to stay linear and simple. I would be lying if I said this was my first take at designing the logo. During the Summer I got this amazing opportunity to work with the Managing Director of Egan-Anderson. He needed a logo for a new company, Octonis, and he chose to dedicate his time and patience to help me learn Corporate Design. It was an amazing experience. I was able to really grow in my field of Design. I had never done a Corporate look before but enjoyed the process of designing this logo for Octonis. I look forward to continuing to work with the Managing Director and continuing to grow in the work of Corporate Design!
